Today more than ever, parents face the challenges of rearing a happy, healthy child. The fact that pre-school children are being prescribed anti-depressants shows what a critical time we are living in. According to the Center for Disease Control, one out of every six children has a behavioral, neurological or developmental disorder. They also estimate that as many as 1 out of 150 children born will have autism. This means that being a parent of an exceptional or special needs child is no longer unusual. Families today need support like never before.

This brings us to the importance of natural emotional care. Four years ago, Occupational Therapists Valerie Goodfriend, OTR/L and Norma Wright, OTR/L, began using Kaliana’s Emotional Care Formulas with the children in their practice. In the summer of 2008, KidsAbilities volunteered to sponsor a pilot study of Kaliana’s products. A portion of their clients participated in the study, while others remained as a control group. We wanted to determine how specific challenges might be supported. So, children representing different challenges were selected. Each child was asked to find their preferred Formula by choosing their favorite image among 12 illustrations that represent the 12 Formulas available to Practitioners.

The results were astonishing to say the least. In fact, 71% of parents on average said their special needs child was happier, calmer (emotionally), slept better, and had less temperamental outbursts 35% of the time when using Kaliana's 3 applications together over a 30 day time span.

According to one mother in the study, after 60 days on the products her seven year old daughter has dramatically improved. “One of the most remarkable changes I’ve noticed is that we now go days without fussing with each other, without a major breakdown, without fighting. Almost EVERYTHING was a battle. Now, it’s not.…My daughter has demonstrated a pattern of handling her extreme emotions more effectively.”

Another parent of a six year old in the study spoke of the improvement in her child’s verbal skills. His greatest social challenge at the beginning of the study was his communication with others, and his greatest learning/cognitive challenge was his speech and language. After only 30 days using Kaliana’s 3 layers, his difficulty with communication dropped from a 5 to a 2 (with 5 being major and 1 being minor), and his challenge with speech/language dropped from a 5 to a 2.5. His mother shared that she could now “understand 95% of what he says. He isn’t searching for words (like he use to). He is happier, has less traumatic outbursts and his memory is 90% better.”

This same parent noted even more dramatic improvements in his memory and verbal skills after 60 days of consistent use of the 3 layers together. “His memory is much better. Before, he would forget things within minutes and never remember/discuss them again. Now, if I say we will get something next time, I better mean it, because he doesn’t forget. He also has started to use bigger words in his everyday speech. He uses these words correctly, which means he knows what they mean and is not just repeating words that he hears.” In addition, she remarked upon his ability to think more clearly. “He is able to think better. Seven out of ten times he is able to remember what something is. A few months ago, he couldn’t find any of the words he would try to think of.”

Another child’s greatest social challenge was meals with his family and eating what other kids eat. After a month she shared that he “is trying to eat what others eat.” His sense of frustration and of being a failure had dropped from a 4 to a 3 (with 5 being major and 1 being minor). She also noted “He has grown more positive.” After only 13 days, she found improvements in his behavior towards others. “He is becoming more considerate of others, more thoughtful.” And at the end of the 30 days she again noted, “He has also become very caring about others.”

Many other parents made notes of improvements in their child’s ability to make long trips in the car, endure thunderstorms, and watch fireworks “without being affected by the loud noise.”
