Children's Study

Positive Effect of Kaliana Emotional Care on children with special needs

Goodfriend, V. Wright, N.

2008, June.

Objective:

This pilot study examined the emotional effects and the potential for sensory or behavioral changes when using Kaliana Emotional Care with 24 exceptional children ages 5-10.

Methods:

Children representing varying special needs ranging from speech/language communication and sensory, to eating disorders and Williams Syndrome were included. Each child was asked to choose their preferred Kaliana Formula by using the colors and images. All 24 children in the study used the Fix-me™ Mists in therapy at least once per week for 30 days. For the control group, 12 children continued this process for an additional 30 days. The test group of 12 children began using all three layers of support—Fix-me™ Mists, Beverage Boosters, and Deep-release™ Oils—for the additional 30 days. The goal was to determine if sleeping patterns, anxiety levels, tactile sensitivities, eating habits, and temperamental outbursts would be better supported using Kaliana Natural Emotional Care daily, versus only weekly during therapy, and using all 3 applications versus 1. One parent or guardian of each child was asked to complete both initial and final evaluations for his/her child which ranked specific challenges on a scale from 1-5. Each day for the 30 days that same parent/guardian completed a daily report which included .

Results:

71% of parents on average said their exceptional child was happier, calmer (emotionally), slept better, and had less temperamental outbursts 35% of the time when using 3-layers together over a 30 day time span.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, we found using the Kaliana 3-layer Method significantly helped the children handle their emotions, become more social, improved memory, verbal skills, and/or learning/cognitive abilities. Significantly greater improvements were seen when using the 3-layers daily as compared to only using the Fix-Me™ Mists during therapy sessions.

Additional Parental Comments

(Day 4) He did well today - doesn't usually tolerate changes in routine as easily - he tried a variety of NEW foods at breakfast buffet which is unusual for him to do. He seemed less bothered by siblings during 12 hour car ride (than previous trips).
(Day 6) He was served food differently than how I make it at home - and although he still wouldn't eat it - he did not react with a violent outburst - he just ate something else. Much less volatile reaction than in past.
(Day 8/9) less aggressive; less outbursts. had a few conflicts with other family members, but not as violent as in past.
(Day 16) We have been up late all week and he was tired and did have an outburst before bed - but prior to that in the evening, right after he had the booster in his dinner drink he was very loving and affectionate toward me which is quite rare. He laid on me and let me snuggle with him which was nice.

There have been moments when I have noticed big changes in levels of cooperation, thinking of others, less explosive reactions and handling change better. But controlling anger is still a big issue for him. I would recommend my child continue use of products, but switch to Comfort as he is requesting.

I am beginning to notice an improvement in her ability to handle frustrating situations. There is not as much self hurting/screaming/tantrums as I expected by this point in the summer. She is actually quite helpful at times. There is still a lot of anger, but she is having breakthroughs on a regular basis - I guess that's indicating a pattern of change.
I have also seen an increase in cognitive retention - knowing letters, desire to write, forming shapes, remembering song lyrics. I would recommend my child continue use of these products.
(30 days) Participant #002, child 7 yrs

Overall my daughter has demonstrated a pattern of fewer and less extreme temperamental outbursts, less resistance to falling asleep, improved energy, increased ability to function well within increased stress situations (like being over-tired), more emotional calmness, less aggression, reduced tactile sensitivities... and is overall just a happier kid. Our relationship has seen dramatic improvements over the course of the study. I would recommend my child continue use of these products.

We now go days without fussing with each other - without a major breakdown - without fighting. She enjoyed the Mist most. This gave her the immediate effect that she needed. She was resistant to the oils in the beginning, but now she likes them. She was off and on regarding the boosters. At one point she drank a good portion of the bottle, and other days she didn't want them at all.

A few school related notes. Last year resulted in her being expelled from a Montessori kindergarten, and took a great deal of effort to get her into a new school. We began using Kaliana's products mid-June. After going back to school, the teacher's comment was: 'You weren't kidding! This is a totally new [child].' ...'She has been soooo patient at school. She is so precious and thoughtful.'
I would recommend my child continue use of these products.

(Day 5/6/9) Consistently eating much better since beginning. He's much more talkative, making better connections. He is more accepting of criticism. He is more focused and seems to listen/understand more. Everything seems to be calmer. There are still a few outbursts with older brother but they are not as frequent. He keeps reminding me about the oil. He REALLY likes that.
(Day 13) Continues to use more and more words that I have never heard him use before. Doesn't seem to be searching for words. Talking naturally w/out having to concentrate on what he's trying to say.
(Day 16) Not as quick to get mad. Just getting a lot better with remembering. Being able to communicate better, using big words, and not struggling to think of what he's trying to say. HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!

Speech/language and communication with others was his greatest challenge before the study. We can now understand 95% of what he says. He isn't searching for words and his memory is 90% better. He is happier and has less traumatic outbursts.
I would recommend my child continue use of these products. (30 days) Participant #004, child age 6

We are able to reason with him better when he has an emotional outburst with his brother. He is much more outgoing. He seems to be more comfortable 'in his skin'. Is much more active and better focused.
His memory is much better. He is able to remember things for days on end. Before he would forget things within minutes and never remember them again. He also has started to use bigger words in his everyday speech. He uses these words correctly, which means he knows what they mean and is not just repeating words he hears. 7 out of 10 times he is able to remember it. A few months ago, he couldn't find any of the words he would try to think of.
I would recommend my child continue use of these products.

Having a child with multiple physical disabilities, who is bright but a different learner is our greatest challenge as a family. He still continues to have emotional outbursts - they are of shorter duration. Interaction with others has improved. Active learning has increased, as he is suggesting new ways to do things or to entertain himself, being a bit more independent. I would recommend my child continue use of these products.

Letter recognition and reading has improved. He is starting to recognize many letters in public and picking out words. Walking is child's greatest physical challenge. Walking and movement has improved, but it is still a major impact in our lives. I would recommend my child continue use of these products. (60 days) Participant #005, child 5 yrs

(Day 5) I was out last night and the boys were at home with their Dad - who's not as familiar with the routine. My son asked for the oils and the mist and told his Dad what to do!!
(Day 7/8) Less frustrated than in the past when he tackled something difficult. He handled losing a game to his brother with minimum pouting and frustration.
(Day 11) He handled an 'argument' with minimum - and appropriate - level of frustration.
(Day 16) He responded to fireworks very well - he usually doesn't like them. No bad reaction to the noise of the fireworks.

He really likes the serum and the spray. I've noticed a higher tolerance for frustration, "fall apartness'" and less irritability when tired or worn-out. I would recommend my child continue use of these products. (30 days) Participant #007, child 8 yrs

He liked the regular use of products. It seemed to have a 'levelizing' support role for him. He seemed able to handle frustration better. We never really mastered getting all the regimen steps down regularly. We would love to keep using the serum at night and the spray. I would recommend my child continue use of these products. (after 60 days) Participant #007, child 8 yrs

Overall I think he is better with consistent use. He does not require as much coaxing/pushing. More independent. He actually gets the product himself whenever he needs it. He especially likes the mist!! I would recommend my child continue use of these products.
(30 days) Participant #009, child age 8

(Day 4) Haven't seen a marked change, although I do feel she calms down when I use the oil and spray. She likes the smell of the spray and enjoys the extra attention she gets from me when I spray the mist and massage in the serum.
Participant #010, child 10 yrs

She enjoys the Kaliana treatments. We've had a nice summer with less fighting with siblings, calmer schedules. I would recommend my child continue use of these products.
(30 days) Participant #010, child 10 yrs

(Day 2) She loves the smell of the spray; it always puts a big smile on her face. I think the combination of product types may have helped to head off some weather-inspired headaches for her. I asked her if she felt any 'different' the last 2 days and she just smiled sort of dreamily and said, 'Yes, I think a little happier; it's nice.'
(Day 25) I really think I can see the combination of products working together on days like today where a strong start to the day could have been derailed by a headache (hers come on quickly), but she rallied and ended up far more focused for tutoring than I would have expected - it really showed because they are doing challenging (math) logic puzzles.
(Day 27) We cut short headaches Friday and Saturday night with hot packs and oil and mist. She noticed she slept better and didn't wake up as often during the night. Her headaches were gone in the morning.

I've already seen a difference and happily so has she - in how different forms of the product can be used to boost her energy; encourage calm/focus throughout the day; help ease stress held in neck, shoulders & back; better ease into sleep...the sprays brought an instant smile and a deep breath every time. We will definitely continue incorporating the products into her daily life and may try mixing scents/formulas.
(30 days) Participant #011, child age 10

(Day 32) I've noticed she's calmer when she's faced with kids who aren't accepting of her...She still gets her feelings hurt very easily, but I see a difference in her maturity level and her ability to handle a situation without crying or showing her emotions as easily.
(Day 40, 47) She was already in a pretty happy place today, but she commented on how the sprays in particular make her feel calmer and happier. The oil/mist combo is good near bedtime, especially if she's not feeling well. She says it makes her feel happy and peaceful before bed. I wonder if it helps stop or slow down her headache cycles (she frequently gets several in a row that come on quickly).
The beverage booster still seems to boost her focus and sense of peace when she drinks it in her water bottle at camp. I'm going to try it in her water for lunchtime at school this year. She felt like the oil and the mist were comforting (more drawn to oil when she was tired and achey and more drawn to the mist when she was hot and sweaty).
Participant #011, child 10 yrs

Our life is not an easy fit for doing things at a set time, but I think we really gravitated to what she needed most and when. The oil was great for when she needed to slow down and relax; the booster was great when I could add it to her water to drink during the day at camp (rejuvenating) and she loves the spray anytime she wants a lift. I would recommend my child continue use of these products.

(Day 8) We traveled for 4 hours 15 minutes - The long trip did not phase him. He was very happy and cutting up. Typically he would be bothered by the lengthy travel.
(Day 13) He is becoming more considerate of others, more thoughtful!
(Day 16) He stayed up late to watch the fireworks. He enjoyed them and was not affected by the loud noise.
(Day 17) Thunderstorm. Very positive and no fear of the storm.
(Day 19) We went to buy a 1/2 bushel of peaches at the fruit stand. Before I could get the peaches paid for, he grabbed one and was going to eat one with the fuzz on it. We washed it ad he ate the complete peach (skin on). This is HUGE! Normally he will not eat an apple or any other fruit with skin on.
Very caring and attentive to other peoples needs. More considerate of others.

He has grown more positive. He is also trying to eat what other eat. He has also become very caring about others. I would recommend my child continue use of these products. (30 days)
