Rose Absolute Essential Oil: Heartache and Grief

Rose Absolute essential oil is found in the following Kaliana Formulas: Clarity, Comfort, Confidence, JoyClick here to learn why using blends are more effective than using individual essential oils.

---------------------------

The rose is perhaps the most respected and widely recognized of all the floral aromas. As you read further, you will understand why it has been revered for its physical and emotional healing properties since Ancient Egypt.

Roses were highly prized by the Ancient Romans and Greeks and associated the flower with love and beauty. They decorated their homes and temples with extravagant rose gardens. They would inhale the fragrance of roses to clear the mind and relieve headaches.

There are two kinds of extraction methods for Rosa damascena used interchangeably:

  1. Rose otto is extracted by steam distillation
  2. Rose absolute is extracted by a solvent extraction technique

They both vary in viscosity, color, price, and scent intensity (absolute is the scent that is most recognizable), but each are equally as important to use for different types of applications.

It’s actually one of the most expensive essential oils. It takes up to 22 lbs of petals to produce a 5ml bottle (average $175 per 5ml bottle). That’s A LOT of roses!

The Symbol of Passion & Sorrow

Love and heartbreak have been deeply connected throughout time, partly because the deeper you love, the deeper the pain when you are separated whether due to location, disagreements, or loss.

The rose is the most popular flower sent in representation of love for Valentine’s Day, a Birthday, an Anniversary, or to surprise a significant other. It can also, however, convey condolences when one is grieving.

How many rose tattoos can you recall that use it as an expression of both love and remembrance? Rose oil is has been known to fire up romance as well. Just think of a bed or bath with rose petals strewn across it to intoxicate with a deep, luscious scent.

6 Emotional Benefits of Rose Essential Oil

Rose essential oil has lasting physical, mental and emotional health benefits. This is why you should incorporate using it in your daily routine whether it’s through diffusion or applying it to your body as part of an oil every day.

Here are the benefits of rose essential oil:

1. Heartache and Grief

For thousands of years, rose oil has been used during times of stress, particularly while experiencing grief. In history, many physicians and healers have used it to help open the heart center to strengthen the heart.

It can help soothe the nerves, ease meltdowns, and encourage emotional recovery.

Using rose oil in aromatherapy has a relaxing effect in humans, according to a 2009 study. It was found that rose essential oil was able to decrease:

  • blood pressure
  • breathing rate
  • blood oxygen saturation
  • pulse rate
  • skin temperature

The subjects also reported feeling more calm and relaxed.

2. Reduce Anxiety

Rose essential oil is the second most popular after lavender for relieving anxiety.

In a 2014 study, women who were pregnant for the first time were subjected to a 10-minute inhalation and footbath with rose oil. Findings have shown that it reduced their anxiety levels during the active phase of labor.

In another study, hemodialysis patients were asked to inhale rose water for 4 weeks. According to the results, it reduced their anxiety and improved their emotional and spiritual condition during hemodialysis treatment.

3. Combat Depression

A combination blend of aromatherapy using rose oil in high risk postpartum women showed positive results against depression. A pilot study was published in 2012 which gave high risk postpartum women a 2.5% solution of rose & lavender oil aromatherapy, twice a week for four weeks. It showed significant improvement in postnatal depression and anxiety.

In one case study for depression published by Bastyr University in Seattle, WA, it was documented that rose oil improved an 85-year old woman with depression:

“Many of her friends were dead and she lived in a nursing home a long way from her family who did not visit her often. She did not sleep well and was prone to hyperventilation and palpitations.”

During the course of the trial, two drops of rose were inhaled on a facial tissue four times a day. According to the findings, within 1 week, they observed that she was smiling more and sleeping better.

She was also discussing how she could become involved with looking after the houseplants in the facility.

4. Regulate Hormones

In the ancient medicinal art of India, called Ayurveda, rose, in all of its forms, can help to balance both the emotions and physical body at the same time.

Rose is therefore revered in this medicine for the healing effects it can have on balancing hormones, health and digestive system.

In fact, a 2006 study on college students who used rose oil with lavender and clary sage, can relieve the discomfort of moderately painful menstrual cramps. The oils were used topically and showed a significantly lowered pain level in the group using the essential oil blend, versus only almond oil or nothing at all.

Another study in 2008 had menopausal women receive weekly massages with rose, rose geranium, jasmine and lavender. Findings have shown that they began to experience significantly reduced menopausal symptoms as compared with women who did not.

5. Increase Libido in Men

In a 2015 clinical trial, it was found that the consistent use of rose essential oil over an 8-week period of time showed a decrease in depression and an increase in sexual function in males suffering from major depressive disorder and SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction.

Taking SSRIs (antidepressants) can have a negative effect on sexual performance by causing a lower libido, impairment in arousal, erectile dysfunction, delayed ejeculation, and inability to orgasm.

6. Improve Sleep

Those who have trouble sleeping can also benefit from rose oil. A study conducted in 2014 found that the inhalation of rose oil can induce better quality sleep in patients admitted in CCUs (coronary care units).

They were subjected to rose oil aromatherapy for three subsequent nights and were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

Rose Oil for Beauty & Emotional Support

Rose is exceptionally effective for emotional resilience—that's why it has remained so valued throughout time. When your emotional heartiness shines, your inner glow radiates through the skin in a way that others can clearly see.

Combine that emotional sparkle with wrinkle soothing, skin repair and regenerative benefits, and rose becomes an essential powerhouse in your daily beauty regimen.

Rose essential oil can be inhaled through diffusion or a mist, combined with carrier oils to be applied directly to the skin, or added to baths in small amounts. It can be quite pricey, but the healing properties are so powerful that one drop goes a long way.
