The Pro-Emotion Revolution—Your Deep Emotions Make You Strong
Mar 22, 2019
“Let’s talk about how you feel” says few people ever, unless you’re in a therapy session. There tends to be a negative stigma around the topic of emotions, especially deep emotions such as grief or trauma, because they make most people uncomfortable.
As part of the human experience, we each will go through negative experiences that result in feeling grief, disappointment, anxiety, heartbreak, and trauma. Of course, on the other side of this is immense joy, excitement, and love.
But all feelings, even the ones we prefer to avoid and run from, are what allow us to live in the fullness and richness of life’s journey—there is no happiness in numbness.
At the end of the day, each of us craves closeness. Our significant others, families, friends, and communities are what help give meaning to our lives. Even the strongest of us need love and support to feel whole.
And yet, many of us still feel incredibly uncomfortable looking inside and opening up about the deep emotions we harbor—that feeling of being raw and vulnerable can be terrifying, because those are your deepest feelings, and many of us fear rejection or judgment...
...Our society engraves in us that crying or showing emotion makes us weak. But in fact, going inside and acknowledging our pain, and opening up to a world that tends to be cruel—there is nothing stronger than that.
The reason it makes you strong is that feeling those deep emotions, and letting them go gives you great power in how you feel. It makes you unafraid of your emotions – and in essence, unafraid of life.
It gives you the freedom to enjoy loving, enjoy closeness, enjoy laughing, and not be afraid of what’s around the corner, or who might be awful to you. You begin to see that other people have issues, and that their meanness, ugliness or unkindness towards you is actually their problem, their personal pain that they are taking out on you.
Feeling your emotions can be a bit intimidating at first, especially if you have spent a lifetime burying them or running from what you feel...
...Numb is an emotion. It’s the emotion that most people opt for. Numb is what alcohol, drugs, and emotional and pain meds make us feel. That’s why they can be so addictive. There’s nothing wrong in using something to escape or have fun from time to time. But numb is not happy. Numb is simply surviving, and leaves a deep sense of emptiness inside.
Beginning to feel emotions, even just a little bit each day, begins to bring you back to life. If you look backwards, you have survived every painful moment in your life. You are still here. You still have a life. And you likely still have a lot of life left.
Look at little kids and how happy they are. That’s because they aren’t afraid of their emotions. They have a melt down when they want – and notice it only lasts for 5-15 minutes if you let them have it without trying to fix it. They fix themselves. They feel their pain and disappointment, and then move on to the next thing.
As they age, this goes away because we fuss at them and teach them not to feel, or we distract them. On the inside, you are the same as that child. Just with a lot more years of pent up emotion that was never released.
We all face pain in our lives. The key to regaining joy is facing the difficulty and coming out on the other side, brighter and more vibrant because of the struggle.
Think of it like walking. When you first started, you had to learn to crawl. Then you learned to stand, to wobble, and then to walk. But if you had tried to start with walking, it would have been overwhelming. Emotions are like that. One small step at a time. Feeling is just like walking or talking; it’s a skill that gets better over time. And that’s what the Pro-Emotion Revolution is about.
The Pro-Emotion Revolution is about beginning one step at a time to set yourself free. To become stronger and more alive, so that your life becomes richer and more rewarding. That’s what we want to help you with. That’s what empowerment looks like. Being willing to take the biggest challenge—to get to know yourself and your feelings to unlock your happiness and passion. Take that power, change your life, and gain a deeper love and sense of fulfillment than you ever thought possible.
Become an unstoppable force of strength for the life you have always deserved.
