Sandalwood Essential Oil: Calm + Stabilize Emotions and Busy Mind

Sandalwood essential oil is found in the following Kaliana Formulas: Calm, Confidence. Click Here to learn why using blends are more effective than using individual essential oils.

--------------------

Prized for its woodsy, warming aroma, sandalwood essential oil has been used as a base for perfumes, cosmetics, and incense.

It is sourced from the fragrant sandalwood tree that is native to India and Australia. If stored correctly, wood chips and shavings from sandalwood can retain their fragrance for several decades...

...This property made sandalwood an ideal material for incense and has remained so for thousands of years.

In China and Tibet, sandalwood has been recognized as an herbal medicine due to its antiseptic nature. The therapeutic value of sandalwood is at its fullest when the tree has grown for at least 40 to 80 years. This is why in India, it is illegal to harvest younger trees.

During harvest periods, sandalwood is removed as an entire tree—including the stump and roots—to maximize profit instead of sawing it down at the trunk. Chips and billets are cut from the heartwood of the tree and go through steam distillation to produce a clear liquid that is a pale yellow to gold in color, with an exotic smell that is subtle and lingering.

Emotional Benefits of Sandalwood Essential Oil

Kaliana’s Emotional Read on Sandalwood:

Sandalwood essential oil is considered to be both spiritual and sacred. You will find that it has been used around the world for centuries as an aid for meditation and prayer.

It, therefore, makes sense that its most popular function today is increasing a sense of calmness in people who are stressed and overwhelmed with the demands of day-to-day life.

Sandalwood essential oil helps connect to your core and line back up your faith in the Divine. It can restore your belief that anything is possible, and help reignite lost passion.

Sandalwood is used for religious ceremonies in Hinduism, including weddings and births. It was ground into paste and burnt as an offering to deities, and also believed to cleanse the air and create a meditative environment.

It is also very popular to burn sandalwood during Buddhist rituals. According to tradition, doing so can promote human mindfulness and transform desires. It allows a person to relax into a peaceful state.

The scent of sandalwood essential oil opens up the root and sacral chakras, invoking better intuition and a greater connection with the Divine and oneness of all...helping to awaken and inspire your natural gifts and talents.

1. Aphrodisiac

In traditional medicine, sandalwood oil is used as a natural aphrodisiac. A 2013 study has found that it can increase sexual desire in both men and women. It can also help men suffering from erectile dysfunction. It can be mixed with a carrier oil and massaged onto the abdomen or legs, or inhaled through diffusion.

2. Sedative Effects

Just like lavender, sandalwood tops the list of essential oils that are most effective in giving a sense of calm and relieving anxiety, stress, and depression. A study conducted at Thames Valley University, UK, found that receiving aromatherapy treatment with sandalwood can make patients feel more relaxed and less anxious.

3. Mental Clarity

It is believed that the scent of sandalwood has the ability to promote mental clarity. This is why people are using it for prayer, meditation, and spiritual rituals. Researchers were able to evaluate the effect of sandalwood on attention levels in a 2006 study, which can increase confidence. They found that alpha-santalol, the main component of sandalwood oil, can generate high ratings of attentiveness.

Sandalwood Essential Oil Health Benefits

Sandalwood oil contains active components alpha- and beta-santalol which are responsible for its strong fragrance. Alpha-santalol has been evaluated by researchers for multiple health benefits which include decreasing inflammation and improving blood glucose levels.

1. Healthy Skin

Sandalwood oil contains antioxidants and is also anti-inflammatory in nature. It can combat free radicals that promote premature skin aging.

A 2017 scientific review titled “Sandalwood Album Oil as a Botanical Therapeutic in Dermatology” revealed that sandalwood is effective in treating:

  • acne
  • common warts
  • eczema
  • molluscum contagiosum
  • psoriasis

2. Natural Diuretic

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, sandalwood oil can help soothe inflammation in the urinary system. Thus, it promotes the easy passage of urine. It also increases the frequency of urination, flushing out dangerous toxins that can harm the body.

The German Commission E (a scientific advisory board) has even approved the internal use of sandalwood for the supportive treatment of lower urinary tract infections. However, it should only occur under a doctor’s supervision and should not exceed six weeks. They recommend a quarter teaspoon or 1–1.5 grams of sandalwood oil as an effective dose.

3. Antiviral Agent

Sandalwood is an excellent anti-viral agent. A 2011 study has found it to be beneficial in preventing the replication of common viruses, such as herpes simplex viruses-1 and -2.

This is why it can be used in superficial wounds, pimples, warts or boils - all of which impact confidence levels.  It reduces inflammation and speeds up the healing process.

4. Anti-Cancer Effects

Ongoing studies are also exploring sandalwood as a chemopreventive agent. An animal trial has shown that sandalwood’s active component alpha-santalol can “reduce tumor incidence and multiplicity in a time- and concentration-dependent manner.”

The maximum effect was achieved by applying 5% of α-santalol on the skin of the animal subjects.

How to Use Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood essential oil is effective, easy to use, and you’ll feel its relaxing effect almost instantly.

For massage or other topical applications, sandalwood oil needs to be diluted in a neutral carrier oil such as organic golden jojoba, olive, or sesame oil. It is also more effective when combined with other essential oils to impact more layers of emotions and the body.

If you are into yoga or meditation, you can inhale sandalwood essential oil before stretching to help set the mood. You can use it before journaling to increase your ability to focus. Or, add several drops to your bath water at the end of a long and overwhelming day.

Sandalwood oil is more expensive than other kinds of essential oil because of the huge international demand for the Indian Santalum album tree. Not to mention the fact that a tree must mature for up to 40 years before it can be harvested. Always choose a brand you trust, often small and family-run versus a big supplier, to ensure potency, safety, and effectiveness.
